Nuvoton Reference Application: Communication Protocol Compatibility Solution

With the development of IoT cloud technology, industrial communications require data-sharing and data-exchange between different equipment. Currently, many types of equipment at industrial sites have different communication interfaces, and some of the more common ones include RS-232, RS-485, CAN, and networks. Since the various different communication protocols are not compatible, and in response to industrial IoT requiring all data to be uploaded to the cloud through the network, there is the need for a multi-protocol converter to convert the data and then upload it to the network.

A multi-protocol converter is called a bridge and allows hosts that use different high-level protocols for network communication to collaborate with one another to achieve different decentralized applications. Common protocol converters include:
1. Protocol gateway: Performs protocol conversions between network areas with different protocols.
2. Application gateway: A system that translates data between different data formats.
3. Security gateway: An integration of different technologies that have important and unique protection effects.

Nuvoton’s NuMicro M487 Ethernet series supports 1.8V to 3.6V of operating voltage, as well as an industrial level operating temperature from -40°C to 105°C. This series has an additional configuration of 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MAC and RMII interfaces, hardware encryption engine and multiple types of communication port interfaces including 2 CAN 2.0B interfaces and up to 6 low-power UART interfaces, etc., able to provide the application requirements for multi-protocol converter solutions.
