Fingerprint identification is a type of biometric identification technology. The fingerprint identification system is a set of a pattern recognition system that includes fingerprint image acquiring, processing, feature extraction, and comparison modules. Fingerprint identification is commonly used at locations that require identification confirmation of personnel, such as access system, attendance system, notebook computers, processing inside banks and bank payments. Since each person’s fingerprints are different, and the fingerprints of each finger on the same person are also different, fingerprint identification compares the difference between these detailed features to perform differentiation.

Fingerprint identification technology is composed of both software and hardware; the hardware part is a fingerprint sensor, which is divided into capacitive (scans the amount of charge, difference in temperature and pressure) and optical (uses light to form shadow scanning) sensors to collect fingerprints. The software part refers to the fingerprint algorithm; after the fingerprint sensor reading is complete, algorithms are used to compare the fingerprint with the files in the database.

Complete fingerprint identification in less than 1 second

For capacitive fingerprint sensors, Nuvoton’s M485 series microcontrollers are based on the Arm Cortex-M4F core, with 512 KB Flash and 160 KB SRAM built-in. The system can operate as high as 192 MHz, able to complete fingerprint identification within 1 second; it also provides hardware cryptosystem engines and supports AES/DES/3DES/elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) hardware cryptosystems, fully protecting internal databases and transmitted data.

As for optical fingerprint sensors, Nuvoton’s N329 series microcontrollers are based on the 32-bit Arm®ARM9EJ-S core; the system can operate at a speed between 200 MHz ~ 300 MHz and supports CMOS camera and stacking of 8MB to 64MB of DDR memory. Not only is it convenient for customers to create 2-layer to 4-layer circuit boards, but it can also even allow customers to easily pass EMI and EMC certifications.
